Buckwheat (Fagopyrum Esculentum) is an annual broad leaf summer crop. Buckwheat requires a cool wet growing season to produce high quality grain.
Buckwheat (not related to wheat) is gluten free, high in magnesium and has a balanced amino acid profile. Buckwheat is also low GI, making it a very healthy alternative to commonly used gluten free flours such as rice flour, potato starch and tapioca starch.
Buckwheat is botanically a fruit and requires careful harvesting, processing and storage to ensure purity, mild flavour, optimum nutrition and high baking quality.

Buckwheat Exporting
Buckwheat Enterprises Pty Ltd (Bio-Oz) has been exporting buckwheat to Japan since the 1970s. In 1992 we built our grain facility at Parkes, central west NSW. It is designed for handling segregated deliveries of buckwheat. We dry, gravity clean, and destone buckwheat in preparation for export. Our silos are all sealed and can be aerated or refrigerated. Our farmers are experienced in growing top quality buckwheat as required by the Japanese noodle market.
Buckwheat Gluten Free Processing
Our newly commissioned gluten free facility has been specially designed for buckwheat dehulling and will not be processing any gluten containing grains. Our silo storage is completely segregated to eliminate the possibility of any contamination. Our buckwheat flour and kernels are endorsed by Coeliac Australia.
Buckwheat Chemical Residue Free
Our buckwheat farmers practice Sustainable Farming. They use no-till farming methods to control weeds. Our buckwheat grain is tested each year for chemical residues.
Here is the chemical residue test for our 2020 Buckwheat crop. This test result shows no detectable chemical residues are present for approx 150 chemicals, including Glyphosate (Roundup) 2023 Buckwheat Flour Residue Tests
Our 100% Australian-grown buckwheat is grown using Sustainable Farming methods. Please see our Sustainable Farmers page for more information. Our buckwheat is not grown organically.

The majority of buckwheat flour and kernels currently for sale in Australia are imported organic, mainly from China (including organic Chinese buckwheat imported into Europe and relabelled as European grown buckwheat).
Buckwheat is botanically a fruit and imported buckwheat could be many years old, affecting it's flavour and nutritional value.

Buckwheat may be gluten free but contamination with gluten containing grains means the buckwheat flour or kernels produced may no longer be gluten free.
Imported buckwheat is often contaminated with gluten containing grains.
Please check the packaging to ensure the buckwheat flour or kernels you are buying are labelled as gluten free, preferably with the Coeliac Australia logo.
We are supplying many small cafes and restaurants with our buckwheat flour and kernels.
If buckwheat is on the menu please ask if they are using Bio-Oz Buckwheat to ensure you are eating gluten free, obviously check for contamination within the restaurant as well.

Buckwheat is botanically a fruit and continues to ripen during storage (like picking a green banana and ripening it to yellow during storage).
To maintain freshness we recommend storage in a spare fridge, especially during summer. Alternatively, freezing in small lots say 2kg will prolong shelf life.

Depending on your usage, it may take a while to use the 10kgs.
Insects breed at temperatures above 15C so cool storage during summer protects against infestation from flying insects e.g. grain weevils or pantry moths.
Our plastic-free paper packaging won't protect your flour or kernels against insects.
We don't treat our grain with residual insecticides.
We use sealed silos, and self-cleaning grain machinery, and we fumigate with a food-grade fumigation when necessary but we can't guarantee your flour/kernels don't contain insect eggs, especially during summer.
Freezing for 10 days straight will kill insects and their eggs. If cool storage isn't available during summer, freeze buckwheat flour or kernels for 10 days straight (in say 2kg lots) and then decant into an insect-proof container and place in a cool location.
